The royal fortress of Chinon is situated on a rocky spur overlooking the right bank of the Vienne and the town. This remarkably large medieval fortress dominates the entire old town, which has developed along its entire length below, its walls following the contour of the rocky spur.

An ancient fortified town on the banks of the Vienne River, Chinon is best explored by strolling along its many narrow streets and beautiful half-timbered houses. Don't miss rue Voltaire with its famous Maison Rouge, now located next to the Carroi-Musée, Chinon's art and history museum.
